Quilting Science Stories from Alaska to the South Atlantic Ocean

Science On Tap is BACK IN PERSON at the National Mechanics Restaurant!

Scientists have been increasing their use of communication tools such as blog posts, podcasts and videos to expand their reach and bring in new audiences to conversations around science. How about using a more creative approach, such as quilts to tell stories of science? Marine geologist Dr. Laura Guertin (Penn State Brandywine) will take us on the journey of when she first started combining her quilting and science storytelling skills, and how her field experiences in Alaska, Louisiana, and on a two-month ocean expedition in the South Atlantic Ocean are being shared with quilts.

This event will be held at National Mechanics, located at 22 S 3rd St Philadelphia, PA.

Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are not required for this event.

About the Speaker: Laura Guertin is a Distinguished Professor of Earth Sciences at Penn State Brandywine. Trained in the field of marine geology and geophysics, she has a passion for finding ways to engage her students and general audiences to increase their scientific literacy. She has expanded her science communication toolkit to include creative arts, such as crocheting and quilting, to draw more people into conversations around why science matters and how science applies to everyone.
